The Lion and The Mouse

Book:
The Lion and The Mouse
Author / Illustrator: Jerry Pinkney
Genre: Fantasy
Major Awards: Caldecott Honor
Age Group: PreKindergarten - 2nd
Summary:
A lion was asleep in the forest and a little mouse happened to come on top of him out of nowhere. The lion was awakened and clawed the mouse as it tried to scurry away out of fright. The mouse begged the lion to let it go and later the mouse will repay the lion, but the lion laughed at that thought. One day, as the lion was strolling through the forest, he got caught in a hunter's net and was unable to free himself. The lion let out a loud roar that filled the whole forest. Few moments later, the mouse came to his rescue and began nibbling through the rope until the lion was free.

Evaluation & Comments: I really liked the illustrations and details in this book. Even though it was a wordless book, I feel like this gives a lot of creative freedom for the students. An activity that students could do is to use this book to create their own story. The characters may be limited to the mouse, lion, and the animals in the forest, but it is interesting to see what they can come up with their imagination. For the lesson, I think the book teaches about even though the mouse is small, it still helped the lion in freeing him out of the net. Students can learn that they should always repay someone to the best of their ability whenever they can.
