Book: Calendar
Author: Myra Gohn Livingston
Illustrator: Will Hillenbrand
Genre: Poetry
Major Awards: N/A
Age Group: PreKindergarten - 2nd
Summary: Different experiences happen throughout each month. Whether it be the seasons, everyday weather, activities we enjoy doing, holiday events and vacations, every month is different. Go through the seasons together and explore differences of each month!
Evaluation & Comments: I liked this book and I think it suits younger grades a lot. Even though they are short sentences, I feel like the illustrations can hold a lot of conversation and open up discussion topics with the students during carpet time. As a class activity, I could ask them, for example, what holidays are in February, what they notice happening in the illustrations, or even whose birthday it is as we go through each month. If I were to think of individual activities, I would ask the students to design their own calendar and think/put events that may happen in those months. They could also put their birthday on it as well. Depending on if the teacher wants to or not, allow the students to pick their own month to create a calendar for. If they want to make it a classroom collaboration and put it on the wall after the students are done, that would be awesome and the students can look at it all year as it could be a year calendar.
