Sulwe

Book:
Sulwe
Author: Lupita Nyong'o
Illustrator: Vashti Harrison
Genre: Fantasy, Realistic Fiction
Major Awards: NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Children's
Age Group: Kindergarten - 3rd
Summary: Sulwe was born with a skin color that looked nothing like the rest of her family. Nobody looked like her at school either. She had dark skin that people at her school would make fun of her for. Many times she would wish her skin color was two colors lighter like her sister's so she could make more friends. Sulwe's mother comes in to comfort her by telling her that the person she is makes her bright and beautiful. Then, we are introduced to the story of the day and night sisters which relates to Sulwe and her sister. Once she heard the story of day and night, Sulwe became the strong and bright person she is. If she ever forgot how beautiful she is, she would just stare at the night sky and remember that story.

Evaluation & Comments: I loved this book a lot for my first time reading it! The illustrations were beautiful and so detailed! The message is so important because it teaches that each person is unique and has their own set of qualities that they can bring to the table. Once we finish the read aloud as a whole class, I would like to do a venn diagram of comparing and contrasting the sister and Sulwe, or day and night. Along with that, on each side, we could write the benefits that each one has.
