Book: Duck For Turkey Day
Author: Jacqueline Jules
Illustrator: Kathryn Mitter
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Major Awards: N/A
Age Group: PreKindergarten - 3rd
Summary: They were getting ready for thanksgiving so they talked about Pilgrims, Native Americans, and made pine cone turkeys. When Tuyet got home, she told her mother that she needed a turkey for thanksgiving, but her mother begged to differ. Everybody in her family agreed that they would rather have duck for dinner on thanksgiving, and that made Tuyet sad. She says that her family doesn't know anything about thanksgiving and decides, with the money she has, that it might be enough for a turkey. Even when she went to the market and they got home to start cooking dinner, she spotted turkey nowhere. At least, there was her pine cone turkey that she made and that made her feel a little better. She ended up having a great time with her family and ate great food. When she went to school the next day, they talked about their turkey day as a whole class. Tuyet felt a little better at the end of the class because the other classmates said they didn't have turkey as well at thanksgiving dinner.
Evaluation & Comments: I found this book interesting and a good book to add to the classroom read alouds. This book would probably be most fitting for the week of thanksgiving because it talks about thanksgiving and how her family was the only one that was not having turkey, but instead having duck. For activities, it would be fun if we could create some arts and crafts that were done in the book. They made hand turkeys and pine cone turkeys. I thought the message of this was a good lesson because at the end, Tuyet realizes that it's okay that she didn't have turkey for thanksgiving because other classmates didn't either. What is important is that they spend time with friends and family on that day.
