Mister Seahorse
Author / Illustrator: Eric Carle
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Major Awards: N/A
Age Group: PreKindergarten - 1st
Summary: Mr. and Mrs. Seahorse are travelling through the sea when suddenly Mrs. Seahorse wants to lay her eggs. Mr. Seahorse asks if he can take care of their eggs in his pouch and she agrees. Mr. Seahorse passes by a group of trumpet fish, lionfish, leaf fish, and stonefish. It was time for his seahorse babies to be born, so Mr. Seahorse wiggled and twisted until they all swam away out of his pouch.

Evaluation & Comments: I was glad I got introduced to this book because I liked Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This would be a very fitting book for younger elementary grades because of it's repeated line " As Mr. Seahorse drifted gently through the sea, he passed right by..." and then a different fish each time. Because of this, I thought it would be fun for the students to read this book as a classroom read aloud and before revealing each different group of fish, the teacher could have them say the line and guess what would be shown next.

As for activities, I thought it would be fun to do an arts and crafts. Having students make their own seahorse by coloring or gluing crafts on it allows the students to use their creativity and have some fun at the same time.
